Features: New Century Professional English Series Textbooks. This textbook is divided into two volumes. The first volume focuses on international trade theory, with all main text materials selected from original foreign books published in the past two years. The supplementary texts and exercise materials are also entirely sourced from recent English newspapers, magazines, and other publications from both abroad and China. The main texts emphasize theoretical and knowledge-based content, while the supplementary texts (which are mostly extensions of the main texts) focus on practicality. The exercises cover various forms, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, with particular attention paid to listening and speaking. After each unit, there are exercise answers, listening scripts, and translations of the main texts for reference and self-study. This series of textbooks has the following characteristics:
1. New and Timely Text Selections: Most of the articles were published in recent years, with the most recent ones dating back to 2000, to help learners stay updated on the latest developments and concepts in various professional fields.
2. Bilingual Word Explanations: Some words that are difficult to explain in English are directly translated into Chinese. This approach aims to cultivate learners' ability to consult original dictionaries while also enhancing their memory of synonyms and near-synonyms. The vocabulary noted is all above the level of the four N levels.
3. Gradual Progression in Content and Language: In terms of content, the first volume primarily covers the fundamental principles and basic knowledge of the field, while the second volume focuses on the history and expert opinions, aiming to help students transition from foundational to professional knowledge. In terms of language, the selection of materials considers difficulty and readability, adhering to a principle of gradual progression from simple to complex.
4. Main and Supplementary Texts: Considering the requirements of the syllabus for professional English class hours and total reading volume, we adopted a "main" and "supplementary" text structure. The annotations and exercises for the main texts are emphasized as key teaching content for in-class instruction, while the supplementary texts are primarily for self-study, reinforcing both language and knowledge related to the main texts.
5. Emphasis on Accuracy and Application: This textbook highlights the importance of accurate understanding and students' practical abilities. While helping students expand their vocabulary, especially in professional English, it also aims to improve their ability to read original textbooks and reference materials in their field, understand professional-related content, engage in general conversations or discussions in English about their field, and enhance their writing and translation skills. Therefore, we have carefully designed a large number of exercises covering both text comprehension and language application. To strengthen and improve listening and speaking skills, each unit's exercises include Role-Play and Listening and Speaking activities. The entire textbook is accompanied by audio cassettes recorded by foreign experts.
6. Reference Translations and Exercise Answers: For self-study convenience, reference translations of the main texts and exercise answers are provided at the end of the book.
7. Coherent but Independent Systems: While following the overall writing principles, the six textbooks in the series also maintain their own independent systems based on the characteristics of their respective courses. This textbook is the second volume, consisting of ten units. Each unit includes both main and supplementary texts, with exercise answers, listening scripts, and translations of the main texts provided at the end.
