Features: This collection of renowned foreign novels from the 20th century is the "sister volume" to the already published Essential Foreign Short Stories of the 20th Century and Essential Chinese Novellas of the 20th Century. The collection includes 20 novellas, nine of which are works by Nobel Prize laureates. These works are distinctly original and have become classics in world literature. The selection is primarily based on word count, with shorter works not exceeding 30,000 words and longer ones not exceeding 80,000 words, with the majority falling within the 40,000–50,000 word range. Works that had a significant impact on the 20th century and continued to influence the following century, as well as those by writers who received the Nobel Prize or other major international literary awards, are given priority. Novels that broke new ground or introduced innovative elements in modern fiction are also included. Additionally, efforts have been made to balance works from different eras to allow readers to trace the development of foreign novellas in the 20th century. In terms of translation, priority is given to works with fluent and literary translations, with minor revisions made to some pieces where necessary.
