What is a hernia?

Patient's question:

What is a hernia, and why is my friend's son feeling down? It's because their baby has developed this condition, and they're wondering what kind of help is available: they want to learn more about this disease.

Doctor's answer:

Hernia is a pediatric surgical disease, usually more common in inguinal. It is a reducible mass caused by the intestine detaching from its original position and protruding weakly outside the body. It tends to recur when the child cries and can generally be with manual manipulation. Currently, the child is under 3 years old and requires surgical treatment. The surgery is relatively common and usually takes about half an hour to complete, but it requires general anesthesia. If the hernia cannot be and becomes incarcerated, emergency surgery is necessary.
