What should be done about children's abdominal pain?

Patient's question:

『Pediatrics』My daughter is 4 and a half years old. She suddenly had stomach pain, sweating a lot, and her face was flushed. We rushed her to the hospital. The surgery department ruled out acute abdomen. The pediatrics department prescribed four medications: probiotics, B12, pepsin oral solution, and two tablets of nitroglycerin (limited to one-third when the pain worsens). After taking the medication for three days, she still complained of stomach pain and asked for a gentle massage.

Doctor's answer:

Children with abdominal pain have many causes, including intestinal parasitic diseases. Among these, intestinal ascariasis is the most common. The common symptoms are abdominal pain and poor appetite, with mild pain located around the navel, recurring multiple times. During pain, patients often like to press their abdomen, and there is no tenderness. Some patients may also exhibit abnormal behaviors such as craving coal ash, soil, or other substances. In such cases, it is important to seek medical treatment promptly.
Intestinal spasm. This is a functional disorder of the digestive system caused by strong contractions of the intestinal smooth muscles, leading to intermittent abdominal pain. Each episode lasts a short time, from a few minutes to several dozen minutes, with pain coming and going repeatedly. The severity varies, with severe cases causing patients to roll in cold sweat, pale complexion, and abdominal pain primarily around the navel. It is often accompanied by vomiting, and sometimes the release of a "gas" can relieve the pain. Massaging the abdomen or placing a hot water bag on it can also alleviate this type of abdominal pain.
