Patient's question:
I've been nine days post- circumcision surgery and it's still swollen very badly. I don't need to go to the hospital anymore, I'm taking anti-inflammatory medication. I want to know if I need to take anti-inflammatory medication after having a circumcision surgery?Doctor's answer:
Edema after circumcision is a relatively common symptom. Mild swelling of the glans penis within 3 to 4 days after surgery is normal, but there is individual variation. The cause of edema is that, after circumcision, the blood circulation at the frenulum of the prepuce is relatively rich. Postoperatively, the blood and lymphatic vessels of the skin are cut off, and new circulation pathways need to be established, which may lead to poor blood flow for a period of time. Therefore, if swelling reappears locally after surgery, it generally resolves within 2–3 weeks, although some cases may take more than 3 months. However, there is no need to panic, as the swelling will naturally subside once the new circulation is established. The incision from circumcision typically heals with a scar within 5–7 days. Normal sexual activity can usually be resumed 2–3 weeks after surgery.
