What is a capillary hemangioma?

Patient's question:

I went to the hospital for a physical examination. The doctor said I have a capillary hemangioma. I'm very scared. What is this disease and how should it be treated?

Doctor's answer:

A hemangioma is actually a congenital vascular developmental malformation, lying between a true tumor and a hamartoma. Capillary hemangioma is one type, the cause of which is still unclear but has certain genetic factors. In hemangioma patients, 10% have a family history of the condition. High levels of estrogen receptors can be detected in hemangioma tissue, indicating that estrogen plays a role in the development of hemangiomas. Therefore, the incidence rate of hemangiomas is higher in females than in males.
