Features: The Book of Han is a historical record in the annalistic and biographical style, regarded as a model by later historians. Its pioneering contributions are undeniable. This book provides a new annotated translation of The Book of Han, with annotations in colloquial Chinese to serve the needs of students. The annotations extensively reference the research findings of renowned scholars from ancient and modern times, both within and outside China. The main reference works include: Yan Shigu's Annotations on the Book of Han, Wang Niansun's Notes on Reading, Zhou Shouchang's Corrections and Supplements to the Annotations on the Book of Han, Wang Xianqian's Supplementary Annotations on the Book of Han, Yang Shudu's Insights into the Book of Han, Chen Zhi's New Evidence on the Book of Han, Shi Zhimian's Discussions on the Supplementary Annotations on the Book of Han, Wu Xun's Annotations on the Book of Han, as well as the Historical Atlas of China edited by Tan Qixiang. The annotations in this book strive for brevity and clarity. When encountering difficult issues, the authors prefer cautiously citing various viewpoints rather than offering unfounded new interpretations. The book is printed in simplified characters. For proper nouns that may cause confusion, traditional characters are still used. Ancient and variant characters in the original text are uniformly replaced with modern standard characters. For frequently used homophones in the original text, the corresponding modern characters are generally written in parentheses without additional lengthy explanations. Based on its structure and length, the hardcover edition is published in four volumes: the first volume contains the annals and tables, the second volume contains the treatises, and the third and fourth volumes contain the biographies. At the end of the book, several reference materials are appended, along with tables of chronology, geography, people, and events for the reader's convenience.
