How to treat balanitis and phimosis

Patient's question:

I used to have frequent sexual activity and didn't pay attention to personal hygiene recently. I might have developed balanitis, with many small red bumps on my glans, and it's extremely itchy. Sometimes, if I accidentally scratch it, it becomes pus-filled and very disgusting.

Doctor's answer:

1 Always maintain local cleanliness to prevent secondary infection.
2 For serous discharge and slough, use 3% boric acid solution or 0.1% Ringer's lactate for wet dressing.
3 Corticosteroid cream can be used for non-infectious subacute stages.
4 In chronic stages or during dry desquamation, tetracycline and hydrocortisone ointment can be applied.
5 If there is obvious infection, fever, and lymph node enlargement, systemic antibiotics can be used.
6 Circumcision: If phimosis or edema of the prepuce makes it impossible to move and rinse, or if drainage is poor, and inflammation does not subside after general treatment, preputial dorsal incision may be performed to facilitate drainage. Circumcision should be performed after the inflammation has completely resolved.
7 For severe urological conditions, it is recommended to seek medical attention as soon as possible and follow the doctor's advice for early treatment. Avoid changing medications arbitrarily, as this may lead to counterproductive results.
