Why is semen not liquefying?

Patient's question:

Inflammation has improved, but the semen still doesn't liquefy. I had surgery for an inguinal hernia when I was a child.

Doctor's answer:

Under normal circumstances, male semen is in a liquefied state immediately after ejaculation outside the body. Within a very short period of time, it solidifies into a gel-like or clotted state. After approximately 10-30 minutes, the semen liquefies into a watery liquid. This process is known as semen liquefaction, and this phenomenon is a normal physiological occurrence. If semen remains in a gel-like state outside the body for less than 30 minutes, it indicates a pathological condition, known as semen liquefaction disorder. Common causes of semen liquefaction disorder include seminal vesiculitis and prostatitis, which lead to insufficient secretion of fibrinolysin by the prostate.
