Patient's question:
I am 18 years old, and I have red spots on my glans, and it's very itchy. Should I go to the hospital?Doctor's answer:
Balanitis refers to the inflammation of the glans penis. This condition can be caused by various pathogens, local irritation, and other factors.Guidelines:
When suffering from balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin), a 1/5000 potassium permanganate solution can be used for soaking, followed by applying an anti-inflammatory ointment. For allergic balanoposthitis, oral antihistamines and topical corticosteroid ointments should be used. If phimosis or foreskin edema prevents retraction for soaking or causes poor drainage, and if the inflammation does not subside with general treatment, a dorsal slit of the foreskin may be performed to facilitate drainage. After the inflammation completely subsides, a circumcision can then be performed.
Lifestyle Care:
Daily Care:
(1) Pay attention to local hygiene. Wash the glans and foreskin daily. If the foreskin is too long, it should be treated promptly, and circumcision may be necessary. It is very important to clean the smegma regularly.
(2) Avoid unprotected sex and maintain a clean lifestyle.
(3) If one partner has a genital disease, sexual activity should be paused, and timely treatment should be sought. If trichomoniasis or candidiasis is present, both partners should be treated simultaneously.
(4) For acute balanoposthitis, avoid using corticosteroid ointments to prevent more severe infections.
(5) If ulcers or erosion develop, change the dressing promptly, twice daily, to avoid discomforting irritation.
