Patient's question:
I heard that varicocele needs surgery, can't medication work?Doctor's answer:
Primary varicocele with infertility or abnormal semen parameters is a treatment indication regardless of symptom severity. Currently, surgical treatment options include high ligation of the internal spermatic vein through the inguinal canal, laparoscopic surgery, high ligation of the internal spermatic vein via the retroperitoneal approach, and spermatic vein embolization. Compared to inguinal surgery and laparoscopic surgery, high ligation of the retroperitoneal spermatic vein offers advantages such as minimal surgical trauma, reduced risk of damaging other blood vessels, lower likelihood of failing to ligate the spermatic vein, shorter operation time, lower surgical costs, fewer postoperative complications, and a lower recurrence rate. It is the preferred treatment for unilateral varicocele. For patients undergoing combined surgical and medical treatment, improvements in semen parameters and pregnancy rates are significantly better than those achieved with surgery alone.
