Publishing Date: 2002-02-01
Features: To fully and correctly understand capitalism in order to draw lessons from and learn from all the civilized achievements of capitalist societies and build a socialism superior to capitalism, the authors, with the strong support of Chongqing Publishing House, have launched the "Contemporary Capitalism Research Series" for the reference of a broad readership. This series primarily translates the works of foreign scholars on contemporary capitalism, and will also introduce the studies of Chinese scholars on contemporary capitalism at appropriate times. The editors believe that knowing oneself as well as others will help China's socialist cause with Chinese characteristics to seize opportunities and face challenges, thereby accelerating our development and gaining the initiative in the world order of the coming new century, placing us in a more favorable position. This book proposes new perspectives on the development of the four major regions of the contemporary world. It hints at the adjustments in relations among capitalist powers after the Cold War, the globalization of trade and production, and changes in financing models. It argues that modern, fresh ways of thinking have altered the content of development in the four major regions of the Third World. The second part analyzes how the responses of different regions to global changes and their chosen development paths have been incorporated into the models of regional hegemonic powers, such as the United States in Latin America, Japan in East Asia and South Asia, and European nations in Africa, through international financial institutions. The third part proposes a conceptual framework for analyzing regional operations: due to differences in each region's economic strength, trade opportunities, access to standardized financial systems, and development prospects, the 1980s to the early 1990s gave rise to a vibrant Asia, a slowly growing Latin America, and a conflict-ridden sub-Saharan Africa. Finally, based on the analysis of different regional development models, the book explores future trends from the perspective of international relations.
