The entire volume has been reviewed and approved by Chief Editor Li Xin. The name index was compiled by Cheng Chaoyun. This volume is the last in the series A History of the Republic of China. It primarily narrates the final collapse of the Nationalist Party regime in the Republic of China. The establishment of the People's Republic of China marked the transition between the old and new regimes. Since October 1, 1949, the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China became the only legitimate government representing China. The historical period covered in this volume mainly spans from July 1947 to September 1949, with the final chapter detailing the founding of the People's Republic of China, as well as the mainland defeat and final retreat of Chiang Kai-shek and the remaining Nationalist forces, to provide a complete and comprehensive understanding of this era. During the writing process of this volume, we were kindly assisted by institutions such as the Second Historical Archives of China, the Central Archives, the Shanghai Archives, the Beijing Library, the Shanghai Library, the Library of the Military Academy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Museum of the Chinese People's Revolutionary Military, the Library of Nanjing University, the Liaoshen Campaign Memorial Hall, and the Huaihai Campaign Memorial Hall, which provided invaluable materials. When conducting field investigations for the Liaoshen and Huaihai Campaigns, we were generously supported by units such as the No. 1 and No. 5 August 1st and May 4th detachments of the Chinese People's Liberation Army stationed in Jinzhou, the Anhui Provincial Bureau of Local Records, the Jiangsu Provincial Taxation Bureau, and the Xuzhou-Linyi and Puli County Taxation Bureaus.
