Is varicocele a serious illness?

Patient's question:

I have had left varicocele for twenty years. I never paid much attention to it before. Last Saturday, during a health check-up, the doctor said it was quite severe. Today, I went to the hospital again and saw a doctor. Is varicocele a serious illness?

Doctor's answer:

1. Varicocele can cause blood stasis in the testes and surrounding tissues, reducing blood flow. This leads to a decrease in the nutrients needed for sperm development and growth, affecting sperm development. Up to 30% to 40% of male infertility cases are due to varicocele.
2. It is recommended to seek treatment and undergo a thorough examination at a local Grade III-A or higher hospital. Surgical treatment is not always necessary for this condition. For younger individuals who have not yet married and exhibit symptoms, using an orchidopexy belt can alleviate scrotal symptoms, which may then disappear. These patients often experience symptom resolution after marriage. In cases with more severe symptoms, high ligation of the internal spermatic vein can be performed.
