Publication Date: 2004-01-01
Features: Montesquieu (1689-1755) was an outstanding French Enlightenment thinker in the first half of the 18th century. The Spirit of the Laws is one of his major works. This book was published in 1784; it is the final result of Montesquieu's lifelong research; it summarizes his theories, with more extensive content, a more complete and rigorous system, and is one of his most important and most influential works; it is a comprehensive political treatise after Aristotle; and it is the most progressive political theory book of his time. The main content of this book:
① Definition of law, the relationship between law and the state, types of governments and their respective principles (Chapters 1-10).
② The theory of political freedom and separation of powers, with the British example (Chapters 11-13).
③ The theory of the relationship between geography and politics and various deductions (Chapters 14-19).
④ Issues such as industry, commerce, population, and religion (Chapters 20-25).
⑤ Changes in Roman and French law, feudal legal theory (Chapters 27-28, 30-31).
⑥ General conclusions (Chapters 26-29).
Our institution has always attached great importance to translating academic masterpieces from all over the world. Since the 1950s, we have been dedicated to translating and publishing classical academic works before the birth of Marxism, while appropriately introducing representative works of contemporary schools with established reputations. Thanks to the support of scholars and translators, we have published no fewer than three hundred titles over the past three decades. We firmly believe that only by enriching our minds with the entire wealth of human knowledge can we build a modern socialist society. The intellectual and academic value contained in these books is well-known to scholars and needs no elaboration.
These translations were previously published as separate volumes, making it difficult to see the system as a whole. Compiling them into a series allows them to complement each other and present a grand panorama, which is both convenient for study and reference and beneficial for cultural accumulation. For this reason, we published more than three hundred masterpieces in nine volumes from 1981 to 2000. We are now continuing to compile and publish the tenth series. By the end of 2004, we will have published four hundred titles. In the future, we will continue to publish works in the Masterpiece series based on the accumulation of individual titles.
Due to the use of original typesetting, the translations could not be thoroughly proofread, and the formatting is not entirely uniform. All prefaces and postfaces from the original translations have been retained as they were, with minor corrections or deletions for some. The academic community fully understands the need to approach these works with a correct analytical attitude, extracting their useful essence while discarding outdated dross, and this need requires no further explanation from us.
We hope that scholars and translators at home and abroad will provide criticism and suggestions to help us improve this series.
