Features: This book selects four short stories by Mao Dun. Lin's General Store is set against the backdrop of the Jiangnan rural areas before and after the Shanghai War of 1932 (January 28th Incident). At that time, the region faced military and economic aggression from Japanese imperialism externally, while internally suffering extortion by Nationalist officials and usury exploitation by landlords. Social turmoil and the people's suffering were rampant. Through the bankruptcy of Lin's General Store, the novel reflects the fate of the collapse of national commerce. The trilogy composed of Spring Silkworms, Autumn Harvest, and Winter Ruins is each independently written yet interconnected, with a historical context largely similar to that of Lin's General Store. It depicts the gradual awakening and resistance of the rural masses as their hardships deepened. The older generation, represented by Lao Tongbao, had their dreams of changing their fate and securing survival through honest and diligent labor shattered. In contrast, the younger generation, represented by Dadaotou, finally awakened to the harsh realities and ultimately took up armed resistance, signifying the inevitable trajectory of rural revolution in China. These stories capture the main contradictions of real life, shaping artistic archetypes of the rural and commercial worlds in the early 1930s through progressively deepening conflicts. Though not lengthy, they carry profound thoughts, blending vivid scenes of reality with historical trends, making them rare among works of the same era.
