Song Dynasty poetry studies still fall within the realm of Confucian studies, but they have paid significant attention to the literary characteristics of the Classic of Poetry. The (fèi xù pài) interpretation of the poetry represented the mainstream of Song Dynasty poetry studies. Its opposition to Han studies stemmed from two reasons: first, the Han school's "beauty and criticism" theory could no longer meet the governance needs of the weak and declining Song Dynasty society, and second, scholars sought to interpret the Classic of Poetry from a literary perspective. Zhu Xi's Commentary on the Classic of Poetry is a representative of the (fèi xù pài) interpretation of the Song Dynasty poetry. The textual forms of Song Dynasty Classic of Poetry literature presented a new trend, which was influenced by the contemporary intellectual climate.
