His original hometown was Yinzhou County, Zhejiang. During the late Qing Dynasty, his ancestors served as a in Anhui, and the family moved to Anhui. After the 1911 Revolution, they settled in Shanghai. Mr. Tong Shuyi was a modern historian of China and made significant contributions in fields such as ancient history, classical studies, and psychiatric research. Born into a scholarly family, he suffered from poor health from a young age and received traditional education at home. With his extraordinary memory, he memorized several classical texts, and even in his later years, he could recite them fluently. This laid an extremely solid academic foundation for his scholarly pursuits. In 1929, Mr. Tong began studying ancient history and was deeply influenced by it, as reflected in his self-composed chronicle. In 1933, when he started writing, he stated, "Gradually adopted the approach of the Ancient History Debating School in the study of classics and history, with Gu Jiegang as my private master." In 1934, he met Mr. Gu Jiegang in Hangzhou and agreed to become his research assistant in Beijing the following year.
