This chapter conducts comparative studies mainly from two aspects. First, it examines the geographical location of Shanghai itself and the resulting locational advantages. Second, it compares the locational advantages of Shanghai with those of other important port cities in modern China. Additionally, it compares the location environment and location competitiveness of Shanghai with those of Tianjin and Hankou, further demonstrating the potential and foundational role of locational competitiveness in the formation of modern Shanghai's comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 2: Modern Shanghai's Urban Institutional Environment and the Fluctuation of Its Comprehensive Competitiveness
This chapter primarily explores the institutional competitiveness centered around the institutional characteristics of modern Shanghai's "dual political system." By analyzing the evolution of the national institutional environment and the emergence of the special institutional environment of the concessions, it reveals the integration of Shanghai's overall institutional environment under the effect of the concessions, the dominant position of modern Shanghai's urban institutional environment across the nation, and the objective role of the institutional competitiveness formed in enhancing the city's comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 3: Social and Humanistic Environment and Urban Comprehensive Competitiveness
This chapter focuses on the competitiveness of the social and humanistic environment as the primary research and analytical object. Based on an in-depth analysis of modern Shanghai's cultural and educational undertakings, the cultural and educational of its citizens, the forms of humanistic concepts, and the value orientations of its citizens, it summarizes the significant impact of the social and humanistic environment on urban comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 4: Factor Markets, Resource Allocation, and Urban Competitiveness
This chapter focuses on the competitiveness of factors and resources, specifically analyzing the competitiveness of labor factors, capital competitiveness, and resource allocation competitiveness. In the formation of modern Shanghai's comprehensive competitiveness, the city's economic strength is the most important component. To examine the formation and enhancement of the city's economic strength, it is essential to first understand how modern Shanghai attracted various production factors and allocated economic resources.
Chapter 5: Industrial Development Level and Urban Competitiveness
This chapter analyzes the industrial structure of modern Shanghai and the resulting industrial and enterprise competitiveness, highlighting their core position in the city's economic strength. It includes an analysis of Shanghai's advantages in industrial investment scale, industrial sector structure, and industrial output value, as well as discussions on the organizational forms of industrial enterprises, enterprise competitiveness, the technological competitiveness of enterprise development, and the market competitiveness of enterprises and products.
Chapter 6: Trade Competitiveness Under the Integration of Internal and External Trade
Taking trade competitiveness as the primary entry point, this chapter focuses on analyzing the integration of internal and external trade, the construction of trade networks, and the agglomeration and diffusion functions of trade, as well as the radiating and guiding role of the port-based market system in the economic growth of modern Shanghai. It is precisely due to the integration of internal and external trade and the resulting market network that modern Shanghai's urban economy has achieved significant competitiveness, which plays a crucial role in the formation of its comprehensive competitiveness.
Chapter 7: Modern Shanghai's Urban Consumption Function and Comprehensive Competitiveness
From the perspective of urban consumption markets and their contributions to urban competitiveness, this chapter analyzes the basic conditions of urban consumption demand, the consumption markets constructed by urban commercial mechanisms, and the consumption environment created by urban services, as well as the special consumption markets formed by urban real estate. It vividly portrays the urban consumption competitiveness, an important component of modern Shanghai's comprehensive competitiveness.

This chapter focuses on urban management and urban service competitiveness as the primary research objects, examining the formation, characteristics, and operational mechanisms of modern Shanghai's infrastructure competitiveness, social service functions, and urban comprehensive management competitiveness.
Chapter 9: Urban Innovation Mechanisms and Urban Competitiveness
This chapter analyzes and discusses the urban innovation capability that constitutes and drives modern Shanghai's comprehensive competitiveness from three aspects: the diffusion of innovative awareness, the formation of the urban innovation system, and the motivational mechanisms of urban innovation.
The final chapter, Chapter 10: Modern Shanghai's Urban Development and Comprehensive Competitiveness, provides a comprehensive summary and discussion of modern Shanghai's urban development and comprehensive competitiveness based on the research in the preceding chapters. It points out that the formation of modern Shanghai's comprehensive competitiveness is a historical process, and urban comprehensive competitiveness not only includes the economic strength of the city but also encompasses its social environment, institutional factors, humanistic factors, and the comprehensive management level and capabilities of the city.
The purpose of this book is to attempt to examine once again why modern Shanghai became the largest commercial port and industrial and commercial city in modern China from a specific perspective and with new perspectives and methods. Furthermore, it hopes to promote the study of urban and economic history in Shanghai through this exploration, achieving certain methodological innovations and breakthroughs.
