What are the relevant knowledge about neonatal jaundice?

Patient's question:

When will the jaundice in children go down? Will jaundice have any effect on children? What should be done?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice can be divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice.
Physiological jaundice: It appears 2–3 days after birth, peaks between 4–6 days, and disappears in full-term infants within 10–14 days. In premature infants, it may persist for 3–4 weeks. Generally, no treatment is required. The main reasons are the massive destruction of red blood cells after birth, excessive production of bilirubin, and immature liver function, which prevents the excretion of bilirubin.
Pathological jaundice: Any jaundice that appears too early (within 24 hours after birth), is too severe, lasts too long, or reappears after fading is considered pathological jaundice. It is recommended to use blue light therapy for treatment.
