What is newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

What is newborn jaundice, is it serious, how should it be treated, what should be done?

Doctor's answer:

The main reason is that during the fetal period, the mother needs to provide oxygen to the fetus. Due to the relatively insufficient oxygen supply, the fetal blood requires more red blood cells to compensate for the lack of oxygen in each red blood cell. After the child is born, he or she establishes their own breathing and directly inhales oxygen, making the oxygen supply sufficient. There is no longer a need for red blood cells to carry oxygen, and the excess red blood cells are broken down by the child's body, producing excess bilirubin. Additionally, bilirubin can only be excreted from the body through the liver's transformation, but this transformation function is not fully developed in newborns and cannot fully take on this task. Furthermore, the normal intestinal microbiota of newborns has not yet been established, so bilirubin excreted into the intestines through bile cannot be further transformed and excreted from the body.
