Features: Chinese people have a tradition of valuing history. There are countless types of historical records, including official histories, private histories, miscellaneous histories, unofficial histories, as well as notes and commentaries on historical and contemporary events. The purpose of studying and reading history is to "learn from the past to understand the present," or as Sima Qian put it, "to observe the changes between past and present." Throughout history, many upright and noble individuals have been inspired by historical events or the contrast between past and present, motivating them to strive and even sacrifice for a higher cause. Of course, there have also been those who learned cunning and strategies from historical precedents to navigate the world and handle affairs. In reality, it doesn’t have to be scholars, erudite individuals, upright and noble people, or fierce and eccentric characters who have a connection to history. Ordinary people also reflect on the present through the past or develop a sense of history over time. Otherwise, Ah Q would not have uttered the boastful words "I was much wealthier than you in the old days," and the old woman would not have sighed and lamented "Each generation is worse than the last." The author's writings on history are likely conversations that fall between scholars and erudite individuals and characters like Ah Q and the old woman. They lack profound meanings or the ability to uncover hidden truths, and they are not overly pretentious—just honest reflections on the social reality that evoke historical memories. What can be confidently said is that these writings stem from genuine feelings rather than contrived grievances, and they do not flaunt scholarly knowledge or rely on bookish pretensions. If one were to compare them to ancient teachings, they align well with the principles of "expressing oneself honestly in rhetoric" and "clarity above all," without deviating from them. The more discerning readers will recognize this. The essays collected in this book are from the past decade or so, some of which are casual writings but are compiled with a focus on historical themes.
