Varicocele of the spermatic cord in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Patient's question:

Recently, I don't know what's going on, I feel extremely uncomfortable downstairs, and I'm also not experiencing morning erections anymore. Could you please advise on varicocele from a TCM perspective?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele refers to the abnormal dilatation, extension, and tortuosity of the pampiniform plexus of veins within the spermatic cord. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for varicocele is not consistently effective. It typically presents as a relaxed and curved scrotum on the affected side, sometimes accompanied by a sense of heaviness, fullness, and dull pain. During palpation, a worm-like mass may be felt in the scrotum, which is the dilated spermatic veins. If there are no symptoms or only mild discomfort, it is generally recommended to wear loose-fitting underwear, avoid prolonged standing or sitting, reduce frequent sexual activity, and refrain from intercourse. Follow-up examinations should be conducted as advised by the doctor. If symptoms are severe or sperm abnormalities occur, surgical treatment is recommended as early as possible.
