Do you need surgery for prostate stones?

Patient's question:

I recently don't know why my lower abdomen is very uncomfortable, and I also don't have morning erections anymore. Should I have surgery for prostatic calculi?

Doctor's answer:

Prostatic calculi are mostly small, often less than 1 cm in diameter, and patients may not exhibit any obvious clinical symptoms. Some patients may have symptoms of prostatitis, while a few may have combined prostatic hyperplasia. The prostate is a solid organ, making it difficult to detect stones through the urethra, and treating stones alone can be challenging. If a patient has severe prostatic hyperplasia with multiple stones, the stones can be addressed during the prostatectomy procedure. Most patients do not require special surgical treatment for the stones.
