Patient's question:
The child was just born, and the check revealed an arrhythmia. Is neonatal arrhythmia serious? What should we do?Doctor's answer:
Newborn arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm different from the normal heartbeat rhythm due to changes in myocardial automaticity, excitability, and conduction. It includes abnormalities in heart rate rhythm or the sequence of cardiac electrical activity. Most newborn arrhythmias are functional, meaning they are temporary, while a few are severe arrhythmias that can lead to sudden infant death. Therefore, we cannot easily treat newborn arrhythmias and must closely monitor and actively treat them. Clinically, more common arrhythmias include paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, sinus bradycardia, atrial and nodal premature beats, ventricular premature beats, and atrioventricular block.
