Can taking medication make the prostate shrink?

Patient's question:

My dad has been urinating more frequently at night in recent years. He has to go to the bathroom several times every night, and even napping doesn't help him sleep well. Additionally, he finds it difficult to urinate and the stream is much weaker, sometimes almost impossible to pass urine if he drinks alcohol. I wonder if he might have benign prostatic hyperplasia. I want to go to the hospital and ask a doctor for some medication. But will just taking medication make the prostate bigger?

Doctor's answer:

From your description, it seems that your father's condition is caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. If the fibrotic gland is large, it can block the urethra, leading to difficulty in urination. In severe cases, it may become impossible to urinate, and surgery may be required for treatment. Around the age of 50, men may gradually experience benign prostatic hyperplasia. Oral medications can only slow down the symptoms caused by fibrosis but cannot cure it.
