Features: Meticulous and vivid environmental descriptions are a significant feature of Balzac's novelistic art. He excelled at using environmental descriptions to recreate the essence of an era. Balzac considered this an important aspect of detailed portrayal, much like how animal fossils reflect a biological history, a typical environment can reveal the face of an entire society. This insight guided him to observe and study the changes in social environments and the resulting shifts in customs, thereby reflecting social realities, which is why his works are rich in the spirit of their time. Additionally, he closely integrated environmental descriptions with character development. Environmental descriptions often serve as a precursor to character portrayals or simultaneously depict the psychological changes and spiritual states of characters. Eugénie Grandet is one of Balzac's representative works. The outstanding achievement of this novel lies in its portrayal of a cunning, greedy, and miserly figure of a bourgeois upstart. The novel depicts the criminal rise of the bourgeoisie, with the central character, Grandet, rising to prominence during the turmoil of the French Revolution. During the Restoration period, he controlled the market, inflated prices, and engaged in speculative stock market activities, multiplying his wealth several times over. His nephew, Charles, amassed great wealth through slave trading, usury, tax evasion, and collusion with pirates overseas. The rise of the bourgeoisie had rarely been the focus of literary attention, yet Balzac began to notice this significant social phenomenon. His exposure carries profound social significance. Grandet is one of the most successfully portrayed miserly figures by Balzac in French literary history, becoming a renowned archetype in the history of French literature.
