What are the symptoms of varicocele?

Patient's question:

During a health check-up, the doctor said I have varicocele, but I don't feel anything. What are the symptoms of varicocele, and how can I know if I have it? I got divorced last year, and I don't have any children yet. The doctor said that if it's severe, it can affect fertility. Could you please tell me what are the symptoms of varicocele?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele can lead to male infertility through various different pathways, not only affecting the regeneration of sperm but also causing an increase in sperm vitality. Therefore, patients with severe varicocele still need to consider active treatment. For mild varicocele or those accompanied by neurasthenia, measures such as reporting scrotal symptoms and applying cold compresses may be recommended. For more severe varicocele, patients with a sperm count consistently below 20 million per cubic centimeter for three consecutive times, or those with testicular atrophy; where the varicose veins disappear when lying flat, the varicocelectomy (high ligation of internal spermatic vein) can be performed. For severe patients of urological diseases, it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately and follow the doctor's advice for prompt treatment. Avoid using medication blindly to prevent worsening the condition.
