Got balanitis, how can it be treated

Patient's question:

Last night, during sex with my wife, I felt some pain in the head of my penis. In the morning, I noticed that the head of my penis was red and swollen. I thought it wasn't a big deal. By the afternoon, I felt some discomfort while urinating. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination, and the doctor said it was balanitis.

Doctor's answer:

Balanoposthitis refers to the inflammation of the inner foreskin and glans penis. A lipoidal substance normally secreted in the foreskin cavity can accumulate as smegma in cases of phimosis or excessive foreskin, irritating the foreskin and glans to cause balanoposthitis. Treatment plan:
1. Maintain local cleanliness to prevent secondary infection;
2. For exudative and purulent discharge, use 3% boric acid solution or 0.1% Ringer's lactate for wet dressing;
3. Corticosteroid cream can be applied in non-infectious subacute stages;
4. Tetracycline and hydrocortisone ointment is suitable for chronic stages or dry scaling;
5. In cases of significant infection, fever, and lymphadenopathy, systemic antibiotics such as cephalexin (0.5g, 3–4 times/day orally) or ofloxacin (0.2g, twice daily) may be used.
6. For individuals with excessive foreskin, circumcision should be performed after the inflammation subsides.
