Does the patient need to have the urinary catheter removed upon discharge from the hospital for hypospadias?

Patient's question:

My child is 3 years old and recently had surgery. I would like to ask, they still have a catheter in place, but my child has been constantly upset and saying they want this thing removed. Do children with hypospadias need to have their catheter removed upon discharge?

Doctor's answer:

When the patient with hypospadias is discharged from the hospital, the catheter does not need to be removed. Under normal circumstances, about one week after surgery, the incision heals well, and the condition stabilizes, allowing the catheter to be taken out of the hospital. After discharge, it is recommended to pay attention to keeping the urethra unobstructed, drink plenty of water, and observe whether the urine is yellow, clear, cloudy, or bloody. If the ureter is blocked or fractured (both ends of the ureter must be brought back to the hospital), please return to the hospital within 3 weeks to remove the catheter. After the surgery, or to the local hospital to retrieve the catheter.
