Features: Introduction This book discusses a form of suicide without precedent in Western modern society, which Durkheim referred to in his earlier research as "mystical suicide." We will see that the analysis of this form of suicide reveals its distinctiveness from known methods, making it difficult to classify it as belonging to one category or another: mystical suicide is not what is termed a sacrifice, in the precise and broad sense of the word. Therefore, when conducting research on this topic, two points are worth noting: On the one hand, our knowledge of mystical suicide is only vague and based on rumors. In fact, we only know of its existence. It would be advantageous to elaborate on it based on existing literature. Correctly understanding a form of suicide that appears abnormal can, in turn, better elucidate the various forms of suicide that we find unremarkable. The power of social influence, such as tradition, outstanding role models, and the environment, surely plays a decisive role in all cases? However, I have no intention of discussing the serious issues here. On the other hand, it can be formally stated that this form of suicide is not only unique but should also be regarded as a distinctive path of self-sacrifice for Chinese Buddhists. These include the solemn and tragic rituals of self-immolation and the related elaborate measures, with different intentions, which help us gain a deeper understanding of the powerful currents of Chinese Buddhism when it reached its peak.
