Laozi for the Tao

Author: Yin Can

Publish Date: 2006-04-01
Features: This book focuses on the philosophy of the ancient Chinese sage Laozi, "increasing in learning and decreasing in the way of the Dao." It argues that Laozi's "way of the Dao" is the "Dao within the Dao" and guides people on how to practice the Dao in daily life, emphasizing virtues such as "upholding virtue." This book, Laozi's Way of the Dao, is another masterpiece by Professor Yin, following his The Wisdom of the I Ching. It is also a transcript of lectures given to young people. Professor Yin interprets Laozi's "way of the Dao" as the "Dao within the Dao," believing that Laozi's teachings for later generations were not about empty definitions of what the Dao is, but rather about how to practice the Dao and "uphold virtue" in daily life.
The Guodian Bamboo Slips, Xing Zi Ming Chu states: "The Dao begins with emotion." Emotion is human common feeling; the Dao is human common principle. Merely talking about it without putting it into practice (doing) will not reveal human common feeling or human common principle. Therefore, this book emphasizes Laozi's "increasing in learning and decreasing in the way of the Dao," bringing Laozi's "Dao within the Dao" back into our daily lives. From there, one can generalize and understand the key to unlocking the entire Tao Te Ching.
