In 1790, the author was sentenced to 42 days of house arrest due to a duel, and during this period, he wrote this book as a casual pastime. As soon as it was published in 1795, it became a bestseller, drawing immense attention and response, pioneering this alternative form of travelogue and ranking as one of the classics in 19th-century French literature. A young French noble officer was sentenced to 42 days of house arrest due to a duel. Military orders and the walls of his home could confine his physical movement, but they could not stop his mind from traveling. Within his room, whatever he saw with his eyes moved his heart, and he reflected broadly on various fields such as literature, art, philosophy, medicine, and the meaning of life. This originally gloomy confinement transformed into a lively, vibrant, colorful, and philosophically exploratory reverie.
