Features: Turpan is located in the eastern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, situated within the Turpan Basin, and administers Turpan City, Shanshan County, and Toksun County. To the south, it borders the Kueruke Mountains and is adjacent to the Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of Maoning; to the north, it reaches the Tian Shan watershed and is connected to cities such as Urumqi, Qitai, and Jimusa. The cultural relics and historical sites of Turpan hold a special position in Xinjiang and even across the country, making it a well-deserved "cultural relic region." Currently, eleven sites have been designated as key national cultural relic protection units, including Jiaohe Ancient City, Yali Lake Grottoes, the West and North Cemeteries of Jiaohe Ancient City, Gaochang Ancient City, the Astana Ancient Tombs, the Beziklik Grottoes, the Yanghai Cemeteries, the Tuyugou Grottoes, the Taizang Pagoda, the Sugu Pagoda, and the Karez wells. This book provides a richly illustrated introduction to the cultural relics and historical sites of Turpan.
