When will infant spit-up stop?

Patient's question:

My baby usually spits up after eating milk. Sometimes it happens immediately, and sometimes it happens just before the next feeding. Sigh, especially at night, I almost fall asleep while patting his back, but he still hasn't burped. When will this spitting up end for little kids?

Doctor's answer:

The stomach volume of a three-month-old baby is very small, and the lower esophageal sphincter is not fully developed. If the baby lies down immediately after feeding, milk may flow out of the mouth, and in severe cases, it may even vomit all the milk just consumed. This type of vomiting is medically referred to as spitting up. Generally, no medication is required, and attention should be paid to immediately removing the milk from the mouth and nose to prevent aspiration. As the baby grows older, the symptoms of spitting up will gradually subside, and by the time you are around six months old, the symptoms will be almost completely gone.
