Prostate hyperplasia and sexual life?

Patient's question:

In the past month, I've been urinating more frequently at night than usual, and it feels a bit difficult to urinate. I often experience a strong urge to urinate and frequent urination. Last week, I went to a urology hospital for a thorough examination and was told that I have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). My friend said that my frequent sexual activity might be related to it. Is benign prostatic hyperplasia related to sexual activity?

Doctor's answer:

When men are sexually stimulated, changes in the external genitalia are more pronounced. During normal ejaculation, the prostate exhibits rhythmic contractions, contributing to the composition of sexual climax and also tightly closes the bladder to prevent semen from flowing back into the bladder. Prostate generally does not lead to sexual dysfunction, but since prostate is more common in the elderly, and the proportion of sexual dysfunction in older men is relatively high, there is often a situation where both prostate and sexual dysfunction coexist. However, there is currently no established opinion on whether there is a direct and mutual influence between them.
