Publishing Date: 2003-01-01
Features: The author of this book breaks away from the traditional mode of discussing artifacts as mere artifacts. The discussion is not limited to the imperial seals themselves but starts from the physical materials, combining relevant literature to study and explore a series of issues such as the origins, production, use, systems, historical background, and cultural connotations of imperial and imperial concubine seals. The entire book not only provides an interpretation of the imperial and imperial concubine seals of the Ming and Qing dynasties but also offers insights into the thoughts, interests, personalities, and other aspects of their owners—the emperors and empresses. Readers can gain relevant knowledge and inspiration from it. It is both the result of the author's research work and can provide materials for further study by relevant researchers and enthusiasts.
Chinese seals are an important part of China's splendid historical and cultural heritage. Studying Chinese seals, especially the imperial and imperial concubine seals of China's feudal society, holds great historical and artistic value for researching the politics, economy, ideology, and culture of China's feudal society, which lasted for over two thousand years. To date, there have been very few achievements in the study of imperial and imperial concubine seals. In 1996, the Imperial and Imperial Concubine Seals of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, edited by the Palace Museum and published by the Forbidden City Press, can be considered a specialized work on imperial and imperial seals. Guo Xiang was the main contributor to this book. Guo Fuxiang spent several years in meticulous research and wrote the book Imperial and Imperial Concubine Seals of the Qing Dynasty, a 150,000-word work with over 100 illustrations, which is about to be published. He hopes I will write a preface to discuss my understanding of the imperial and imperial concubine seals of the Ming and Qing dynasties. To be honest, due to my limited knowledge and lack of research on imperial and imperial concubine seals of the Ming and Qing dynasties, I really cannot offer much.
