What are the symptoms of neonatal jaundice and what causes it?

Patient's question:

I would like to ask, what are the common symptoms of newborn jaundice? I don't know the symptoms of newborn jaundice, it's really annoying. Is there anyone who knows?

Doctor's answer:

Pathological jaundice may be considered in the following cases:
1) Jaundice appears within 24 hours after birth;
2) The duration of jaundice exceeds 2 weeks in full-term infants or 3 weeks in preterm infants, or the jaundice worsens progressively;
3) The jaundice is deep, with the skin of the soles and palms also appearing yellow;
4) The skin appears yellow-green, accompanied by pale or grayish-white stools resembling oil paint, with dark yellow urine;
5) Jaundice reappears after the physiological jaundice has resolved.
During the period of skin yellowing, the infant may exhibit abnormal symptoms such as poor feeding, reduced crying, increased sleepiness, vomiting, diarrhea, staring eyes, loud crying, and convulsions.
