What should I do if a newborn has a stuffy nose?

Patient's question:

My baby is just one month old. He has a stuffy nose. When he sleeps soundly, his nose is quite clear, but when he strains, his nose gets completely blocked, and there's a "puff, puff" sound. Since he's so young, we haven't given him any medicine. But after several days, it hasn't improved, and we're very worried. Please advise the doctor. We are extremely grateful.

Doctor's answer:

Newborn nasal congestion is often caused by secretions blocking the nasal passages. Mom can simply clean it with a small cotton swab. Prepare infant-specific cotton swabs, then apply a little water inside the baby's nasal cavity. Gently clean with the cotton swab and remove it when the mucus sticks to it. Note that the cotton swab should not be inserted directly into the baby's nasal cavity.
Gently press a warm, damp towel on the center of the baby's eyes. Replace it when it cools down. This can also help relieve nasal congestion.
Gently massage the sides of the baby's nose with warm hands, moving from top to bottom, from the bridge of the nose to the nasal wings. Spend more time pressing on both sides of the nasal wings, as massaging these acupoints is very effective for treating nasal congestion.
