Born on November 22, 1900, in Meixian, Guangdong, and passed away on August 12, 1991, in Hong Kong. Born into a family of folk art, he went to Shanghai at the age of 18 and later studied in France for a year. He first enrolled in the Dijon Academy of Fine Arts and then at the école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, also studying in Berlin, Germany. During his time in France, he organized the Hopes Society with fellow students studying abroad and engaged in modern art activities. In winter 1925, he returned to China and served as the of the Beiping Art College, concurrently holding the position of professor. Later, he became the of the Art Education Committee of the National Government University. In 1928, he founded Hangzhou National Art Academy, serving as the and professor. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he became the of the National Art College. In the 1950s, he served as the vice chairman of the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Artists Association. During the Cultural Revolution, he suffered persecution and, in 1977, went abroad for a visit. Two years later, he settled in Hong Kong. This book selects and categorizes quotes from the painting master Lin Fengmian on painting, aesthetics, and art education, accompanied by analyses of his artistic ideas and painting techniques.
