Publish Date: 2003-12-01
Features: The China Society for People's Friendship Studies (PFS) in cooperation with the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing has arranged for republication, in the series entitled Light on China, of some fifty books written in English between the 1860s and the founding years of the People's Republic, by journalistic and other sympathetic eyewitnesses of the revolutionary events described. Most of these books have long been out of print, but are now being brought back to life for the benefit of readers in China and abroad. Born to missionaries, a little American girl tells of her upbringing in a Chinese village in Shantung province, not far from the Yellow Sea, during the late 19th century. Vivid narration of her everyday life, every detail of her household, its people, architectural layouts of the courtyards, living arrangements and styles from a Westerner in China, gives such insight into the life of an American living in China.
