Can you keep soaking in water after a burn?

Patient's question:

At this afternoon, my child's foot was scalded by boiling water. At that time, we quickly had the child soak in cold water. We were worried but didn't know how long to soak. Could you please tell me if it's okay to keep soaking in water after a burn?

Doctor's answer:

When fresh burns or scalds occur, they can be used to cool the wound, prevent residual heat from damaging deeper skin tissues, and reduce pain. When the pain subsides, there is no need to soak for a long time. After a scald, remove clothing and socks immediately, soak the undamaged wound in cold water for half an hour, and then apply sesame oil and rapeseed oil to the wound. For large blisters on second-degree burns, you can use a sterile needle to puncture the edges of the blisters and rinse them with water. After applying burn ointment, you can wrap and secure the blisters appropriately. For third-degree burns, cover the wound with a clean cloth and seek medical attention promptly. Do not apply purple dye or ointment to the wound, as this will affect the observation and treatment of the condition.
