How is purulent meningitis treated in children?

Patient's question:

The child has recently been feeling unwell and has developed symptoms of fever and headache. Later, I searched online and found that this could be purulent meningitis. I would like to know what symptoms are associated with purulent meningitis and how it should be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Hello! Viral encephalitis is a highly seasonal illness. Generally, the cause of brain diseases is due to a history of cold in the past few days (i.e., upper respiratory tract infection), and partly due to mumps infection. Common symptoms include headache, vomiting, fever, mental decline, etc. The younger the child, the more severe the condition. (In our department, there are 3 patients under 1 year old, with poor prognosis, and in a coma for more than 1 week). The auxiliary examination shows abnormal activity on the electroencephalogram. Doctors generally recommend lumbar puncture (to determine whether it is meningitis or purulent encephalitis). But if you have a mild illness, you can do this. Treatment options: If the headache symptoms are significant, dehydration can be used to reduce intracranial pressure (such as mannitol) and antiviral fluid replacement therapy.
