What's wrong with the baby's stool?

Patient's question:

My baby is over 40 days old. The doctor said he has mild intestinal inflammation and prescribed medication. But in the past few days, the last part of his bowel movements is a bit like white strips, a small amount. What is that? Will there be any problems? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

The normal range of bowel movements for breastfed babies is very broad. Newborns who are just starting to breastfeed may have more than 10 bowel movements a day. Or they may not have a bowel movement for 3-4 weeks, or only have one bowel movement, and this is all normal. However, if the stool is very loose, the child may have lactose intolerance, food intolerance, or other issues. In this case, a doctor needs to confirm the child's growth and development to see if further treatment is needed.
