Patient's question:
My little one has been born for about five days now, but there is quite a bit of jaundice. Could you please tell me how long does physiological jaundice usually last without interruption in normal babies? How long does physiological jaundice last without interruption in babies?Doctor's answer:
60-80% of newborns develop physiological jaundice after birth. It appears on the 2-3rd day, peaks on the 4-6th day, and starts to fade on the 7-10th day. In full-term newborns, jaundice usually disappears completely within 14 days, while in premature infants, it takes about 20 days to disappear completely. If the jaundice level in full-term newborns exceeds 13 mg/dL, in premature infants exceeds 15 mg/dL, in 24-hour-old newborns exceeds 5 mg/dL, or in 1-hour-old newborns exceeds 0.5 mg/dL, it is pathological jaundice and requires timely intervention and treatment. If it is pathological, hemolysis is prone to recur. If it is viral hepatitis or cytomegalovirus, treatment should be administered. Usually, it can be resolved around the 14-5 days after birth without recurrence of jaundice.
