The three books—Zhinan (The Wisdom Treasury), Gujin Tanggai (Sketches of the Past and Present), and Qingshi (The History of Love)—can be considered another "trilogy" by Feng Menglong, distinct from his "Three Words" series. Zhinan aims to "enlighten wisdom," Gujin Tanggai to "cure corruption," and Qingshi to "educate in love," all reflecting Feng Menglong's concern for the world. Among them, Zhinan is the most socially and politically significant and practically valuable collection of stories. In his preface to Zhinan, Feng Menglong wrote: "A person with wisdom is like water to the land; without water, the land becomes barren, and without wisdom, a person becomes a walking corpse. Wisdom, when applied to people, is like water flowing through the land—where the terrain is low, water fills it, and where human affairs are low, wisdom fills it. Examining the successes and failures of the past and present, none are beyond this principle." He intended to summarize the reasons behind "the successes and failures of the past and present," a purpose that cannot be considered shallow.
