He studied philosophy at university early in his life and later pursued archaeology, becoming an expert in ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Since 1946, he has published poetry, and in 1953, he gained fame with his first poetry collection On the Movement and Stillness of Dufault, which was recognized as a masterpiece. He later published numerous other poetry collections, including The Empty Kingdom of Yesterday, The Writing Stone, The Temptation of the Threshold, and In the Light of Shadows, all of which are considered enduring masterpieces.
He has received various international and domestic poetry awards and, starting in 1981, became the second poet after Valéry to teach poetics at the Collège de France.
Bonfoey's poetry is rooted in the Symbolist tradition of Baudelaire, Mallarmé, and Valéry, while also incorporating the innovative vitality of modernist art, representing the mainstream of French poetry since the 1950s. His poetry is both elegant and complex, often revealing mystical depths, and rises from everyday experience to ethereal heights through linguistic creativity. His poetic style stands out in the French poetic landscape of the entire 20th century and can be said to be unparalleled in both ancient and modern France.
