Patient's question:
I've been feeling generally unwell lately, and my wife insists I go to the hospital for a thorough check-up. Recently, I haven't known how many times I've been using the restroom, and it's become much more difficult than before. The hospital said I have a prostatic cyst, but I don't know how that happened.Doctor's answer:
The prostatic vesicle originates from the fused terminal of the Müllerian duct and is believed to be analogous to the female uterus and upper vagina, hence it is referred to as the male uterus. Some also believe that the prostatic vesicle is a small pouch formed by the dorsal elevation of the posterior wall of the urogenital sinus, which may be an equivalent structure to the vagina. The vesicle may expand to form a cyst under two conditions: ① Due to the preservation of a larger portion of the caudal part of the paramesonephric duct (e.g., preserved up to the uterine body or even the fallopian tube region), the entire structure of the paramesonephric duct may sometimes be preserved in certain male pseudohermaphroditism cases. ② In very rare cases, prostatic cysts may expand and enlarge due to stimulation from weak or temporary endocrine imbalances, leading to the formation of the cyst.
