Life and Death—Xu Guojing’s Philosophical Records
- There are people who eat without discrimination when hungry, and there are those who choose books without discrimination when hungry. Those who eat without discrimination may ruin their appetite, but those who choose books without discrimination not only ruin their appetite but also their vision and hearing.
- The more developed the papermaking industry, the more people waste language. Wasting language is like scattering waste paper everywhere, always disrupting the environment. Waste paper on the ground can be swept away promptly, but clearing away useless talk among people is much harder.
- Popular works are an exhibition of the author’s worldly nature. Everyone has a worldly nature, so they naturally gravitate toward such exhibitions. Relaxing oneself while reading and browsing others' worldly thoughts is because worldly nature also needs communication.
- Worldly culture relies on self-expression and self-admiration to please readers. As soon as literature and art touch a bit of worldliness, they attract audiences and readers. It’s not that people enjoy catering to the masses, but that catering to the masses can help people gain confidence and, in turn, some psychological satisfaction.
In 1993, Men and Women—Xu Guojing’s Philosophical Records was included in the "Wisdom Series" by Taiwan’s Wisdom University Press, which also collected quotes from world-famous figures such as Nietzsche, Goethe, Tolstoy, and Lu Xun. It was hailed as "the greatest legacy of human history—eternal, shining wisdom!"
In 1995, Men and Women—Xu Guojing’s Philosophical Records was published by China Foreign Translation Publishing House, making it the first monograph in China to specifically discuss men and women in the form of a philosophical record. It sparked significant in both the male and female worlds. Women regard it as the best gift to give their best friends, while men call it the crystallization of wisdom.
Life and Death is another philosophical masterpiece the author has dedicated to the readers after Men and Women. The work takes the two poles of life and death as its perspective, revealing and depicting the eternal state of the human soul.
