How to treat bilateral hydrocele of the tunica vaginalis

Patient's question:

Yesterday I gave my son a bath and noticed that his testicles were large. After further examination, it was said that there is hydrocele in both testicles. How should it be treated?

Doctor's answer:

This requires a check to see the specific size of the hydrocele. Hydroceles in newborns often resolve on their own within two years, so treatment is not urgent. If it has not resolved by age two, a significant number can still be cured by age four or five. If it has not resolved by age six, surgical aspiration is performed, and most cases do not recur after aspiration. This method is not suitable for adults. Adults often experience recurrence shortly after aspiration if the maximum diameter is not reduced. If the maximum diameter does not exceed 1.5 cm, it can be resolved without cold compresses. Do not sit too long and undergo regular follow-up examinations. If there is persistent enlargement or the current diameter is below 1.5 cm, it may be necessary to consider minimally invasive surgery for the hydrocele. It is generally not severe.
